If you are a student who is about to start nursing school soon, you may be a little scared. This is all right though because everyone in your class is scared, whether they admit it or not. In fact, a lot of students go online searching for “scared to start nursing school,” making this a very popular search term. With this in mind, here is some advice that soon-to-be-nursing students should keep in mind:1. Don’t forget that everyone in your class is just as scared as you are. While they may look confident, they are just putting on an act, so don’t let them get you all worked up.
2. Make sure that you are ready to work hard. There is going to be a lot of reading that you will need to do and some of it can be very confusing sometimes. Just do your best to get through it and make a note of anything that sounds as though it may be important.
3. Befriend a few classmates that you can hang out with throughout the program. Tap into popular social networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and FourSquare to stay connected and develop friendships outside of class. This is important because nobody else is going to really understand what you are going through in the same way that they will. The mutual understanding is very important and these people will also help to encourage you to stick with it whenever you feel like quitting.
4. Be ready to feel lost. This is only normal. You probably will forget how to do anything whenever you are nervous; so don’t feel stupid or inferior.
5. Ask a lot of questions, especially whenever you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with something that you are being told to do. Even if the nurse rolls her eyes at you, remember that you have the right to learn and that your patient has the right to receive good care.
6. Give yourself permission to laugh at your mistakes so that you don’t become more stressed out than necessary. Never become embarrassed because every one of us does dumb things. You should also allow your patients to laugh at you because this will help them to feel better too, which is a part of your job really.
7. While you may be really busy, you still need to make sure to take a night off every once in a while. Give yourself time to watch some TV, catch up with your friends and enjoy yourself. By having one day a week when you can do this, you will be able to keep yourself motivated by looking forward to this day.
8. Look for a way to blow off steam. Whenever you feel frustrated, allow yourself to do this. Even if it is as simple as just writing down what you are frustrated about and how it makes you feel, you will probably feel a lot better once you do this. Of course, this is going to take away from your study time but you are not going to be able to keep up with everything if you don’t have a way in which to release some steam whenever you need to do so.
Remind yourself that you are not alone. Find someone whom you can vent to or with whom you can share your wonderful experiences. This will make you feel better too.
